Building an Institutional Research Committee: Getting Started

The use of evidence is foundational to good nursing practice, and the success of nursing research and evidence-based practice within health care institutions requires structure and support for both front-line nurses and nursing leaders. Specifically, health care organizations that are on the Magnet (American Nurses Credentialing Center, Silver Spring, MD) journey must provide evidence that front-line nurses have adequate research resources available to them to help improve overall care, reduce costs, and contribute to greater nurse satisfaction; creation of a successful research committee can be instrumental to this process. In addition to conducting original research, research committees can review evidence; develop evidence-based protocols, policies, and procedures; and partner with quality assurance departments to improve patient care.
