      In 2006 the Emergency & Trauma Center of Borgess Medical Center (BMC) (Kalamazoo, Mich) was experiencing some of the same challenges currently being experienced by other emergency departments nationally. The emergency department was on diversion 9% of the time, patient satisfaction was at the 59th percentile, and only 35% of patients presenting to the emergency department were being seen by a physician within 30 minutes of arrival. It was also not uncommon for more than one third of the ED beds to be occupied by patients awaiting inpatient beds.
