Dear Editor:

Nancy McGowan’s article “Navigating Through the Myriad of Available Journals”1 was a nicely succinct, pragmatic guide to assessing the scholarly value of the many journals crossing our desks every day. I would like to point out one more source of expertise for such evaluations: the medical librarian.

Professional librarians possess advanced degrees and extensive familiarity with journals and publications of all stripes. It is a significant part of our job to evaluate resources for their credibility, scholarly content, reputation, and overall value to health care providers and researchers. We are knowledgeable about tools like journal impact factors to assist in that process. We can even provide guidance to writers on which journals to consider submitting to, or in critically appraising individual articles in a given journal. Critically evaluating information resources is one of the things professional librarians do best, so may I remind your readers to consult us!
